Khaleeli: "The occupation continues to deliberately target women and children

2024-04-07

Ms. Mona Khaleeli, the Minister of Women's Affairs, affirmed, according to statistics from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), that indicators of direct and intentional targeting of women and children in the Gaza Strip are increasing due to the insistence of the occupation forces on killing women and children and displacing them from their homes.

Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip are facing the most dangerous and harsh conditions in decades, including the martyrdom of thousands of women and girls (9560 martyrs out of a total of 33,091 martyrs), in addition to cases of detention, deteriorating health and living conditions, displacement, homelessness, as well as lack of food and water.

Khaleeli noted that approximately 15,000 pregnant women in the Gaza Strip, with 95% of them not consuming adequate amounts of micronutrients, increasing the risks.

Khaleeli added that approximately 155,000 pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns are currently living in harsh conditions with severe shortages of food, clean water, and health services in the Gaza Strip, in addition to about 690,000 women and adolescents facing challenges due to shortages in health supplies, clean water and sanitation facilities.

Khaleeli emphasized that approximately one million forcibly displaced women are facing escalating risks in shelters lacking basic necessities and privacy, amidst intensive presence of Israeli forces and separation from family support networks. Currently, approximately 37 mothers are being killed daily, leaving behind devastated families and displaced children, with 73,000 pregnant women, including 8,100 women expected to give birth next month, in addition to the restrictions on movement, and road closures continue, hindering access to vital health and social services, ambulance movement, and humanitarian aid. Additionally, 1,620 Palestinian families, including 710 children, have been displaced in the West Bank and East Jerusalem due to the houses demolition policy pursued by the Israeli occupation forces.
